Blackwater Preserve
Located just 9 miles from Georgia Southern’s campus, Blackwater Preserve is one of Statesboro's best-kept secrets. This scenic, historic oasis invites you to experience the great outdoors. Explore miles of pristine wetlands as you paddle through gentle waters, taking in the natural beauty of the cypress swamp.
Canoeing or kayaking at Blackwater Preserve allows you to move at your own pace as you soak in the serene landscape and local wildlife. The rhythmic movement of paddling sports is great for elevating the heart rate while offering a gentle, low-impact activity for the joints, making it a sport anyone can enjoy.

This hidden gem offers a relaxing way to get some gentle exercise while enjoying the natural beauty of the outdoors.
Walking trails
Walking is one of the easiest and most effective ways to boost your heart health, and it’s as good for your mind and soul as it is for your body. Walking regularly improves circulation, lowers blood pressure and can even help prevent weight gain. It’s also one of the simplest ways to connect with nature and offers the perfect opportunity to practice mindfulness.
Check out some of Statesboro’s best walking trails and outdoor paths that make walking all the more enjoyable:
• Named after the legendary bluesman who helped put Statesboro on the map with his famous song “Statesboro Blues,” the Blind Willie McTell Trail offers a unique experience that combines nature and history. As you walk the trail, you’ll stumble upon the Blind Willie McTell Tree Walk, a special feature designed to educate visitors about the area’s diverse tree species. The peaceful backdrop of this walking trail allows visitors to get their blood pumping while learning about the history and environmental features of Statesboro.
• The S&S Greenway is the perfect choice for those looking for a smooth, easy walk with plenty of room to roam. This 2.75-mile paved trail follows the old Savannah & Statesboro Railroad, offering a flat and well-maintained path ideal for walking, jogging and biking. Along the way, you’ll find all the amenities you need for a comfortable and enjoyable walking experience, including restrooms, water fountains, park benches and even a picnic area.
• At Mill Creek Regional Park, you can enjoy a variety of different outdoor activities to get moving and work up a sweat. Spanning 155 acres, think of this space as the ultimate outdoor experience, with something for everyone to make fitness and recreation both fun and convenient.
Its 1.25-mile walking trail is lined with 12 different exercise stations designed to ramp up your walking routine and encourage you to feel the burn! Additionally, the park features tennis courts and other sports fields, as well as playgrounds and plenty of green space.
Don’t forget to check out Statesboro's waterpark, Splash in the Boro, located right on the property. It’s the perfect place to cool off and relax in the late spring and summer months, but also check out their winter programs under the dome.
Racket sports
Playing tennis or pickleball isn’t just about getting that perfect serve — it’s also a great way to get your heart pumping while engaging in some friendly competition. Racket sports help to improve heart health by keeping your heart rate up through quick movements and are a fun way to get in a full-body workout. You’ll be so focused on winning the match that you won’t even notice how much heart-healthy exercise you’re getting!
At Mill Creek Park Tennis Complex, you’ll find 10 outdoor courts available for public use from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. The complex provides plenty of space for both singles and doubles, whether you’re looking for a competitive match or just a relaxing game with friends. Pickleball lovers can head to the Sue Oertley Courts from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., where you’ll have full access to six pickleball courts. And if you’ve never picked up a racket before, don’t worry — both of these facilities offer friendly, welcoming environments and are open to all skill levels.
Prioritizing your heart health can start with something as simple as going on a leisurely walk and exploring the amazing outdoor spaces Statesboro has to offer.
